Dr. Ghassan M. Matar

Dr. Ghassan M. Matar graduated with an MSc. and a PhD degree in Basic Medical Sciences (Microbiology) from the American University of Beirut followed by a post-doctoral fellowship (Fulbright) at the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He was then appointed as Research Microbiologist at the Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases, CDC.

Dr. Ghassan M. Matar is currently a Tenured Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Experimental Pathology, Immunology & Microbiology, Co-Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research (CIDR) and Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Bacterial Pathogens at the Faculty of Medicine, American University of Beirut (AUB), Beirut, Lebanon. Professor Matar serves as a member of the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) steering committee (SCOM) and as a Resource/Temporary advisor in WHO EMRO and WHO Geneva HQ.
